This workshop will focus on applying a culturally informed engagement model when talking about suicide prevention in culturally and linguistically diverse communities.
It will cover:
* an understanding of the profile of CALD communities utilising population demographics, and the available evidence to allow informed and meaningful engagement across key intersectional groups including refugees, older people, and other vulnerable subgroups.
* a consideration of cultural contexts as they apply to suicide prevention that will highlight cultural sensitivities. These contexts will be presented by people with deep knowledge of these sub groups/and or with lived experience.
* an interactive workshop approach to consider effective strategies through engagement with key and relevant community intermediaries, considering the cultural strengths of CALD communities and how these can be utilised to support effective engagement; the identification of the most appropriate information and communications mediums and channels through which to communicate suicide prevention, and consider the nature of effective messaging that engages rather than distances CALD audiences.
* an investigation of the nature of community partnerships as essential collaborations to reach and engage with CALD communities. This community participatory approach is and essential aspect of effective engagement.
* a consideration of how impact can be measured and assessed.
Participants will be challenged to reflect on their current practices and consider the requirements of culturally appropriate engagement around highly sensitive issues.
