Our Culture Care Connect Program in the Pilbara, recognises that strong and well-supported staff are the foundation of strong, safe, and connected communities. In the context of suicide prevention and aftercare, our workforce carries not only professional responsibilities, but also cultural obligations, colonial load, and lived experience. To ensure sustainability and quality of care, we have developed a dedicated framework for staff onboarding, induction, and wellbeing.

Our Pilbara CCC Aftercare Worker Onboarding and Induction Framework is designed with both clinical and cultural safety at its core. It goes beyond compliance-based orientation by embedding processes that acknowledge the unique pressures Aboriginal workers and those supporting Aboriginal communities face. From the outset, staff are inducted into a model that honours their cultural responsibilities, recognises the intergenerational impacts of colonisation, and validates the expertise they bring through lived experience.

The framework provides a structured approach to supervision and wellbeing, ensuring that care for staff is prioritised alongside care for clients. Regular supervision is paired with cultural guidance, peer support, and opportunities for reflection on Country. Staff are not only introduced to service delivery expectations but are also given the tools and supports to sustain themselves in what can be deeply challenging roles.

Maintaining wellbeing is not treated as an optional add-on, but as a professional requirement. Ongoing check-ins, cultural supervision, and clear processes for accessing additional support are built into the system. This enables staff to remain grounded, resilient, and confident in providing aftercare services that meet the needs of our communities.

By embedding wellbeing into every stage of the workforce journey, the Pilbara CCC program ensures that our staff are safe, supported, and able to deliver the highest quality of care. Ultimately, this approach strengthens not only the individuals within our workforce, but the families and communities they serve.

Through this presentation, we will share the development of our framework, key learnings, and the impact of embedding cultural safety and wellbeing into workforce development. Our experience demonstrates that when we invest in staff wellbeing, we build stronger services, and stronger suicide safer communities.
