From crisis to creation how making meaning supports suicide prevention and social connection (#35)

This presentation explores how creativity, sustainability, and lived experience intersect to support suicide prevention and social connection. Drawing on my personal journey through suicidal crisis and recovery, I share how a single act of making — crafting a trophy from reclaimed timber — became the catalyst for connection, purpose, and the creation of Bloom Cycle, a neurodivergent-led social enterprise based in Brisbane.

Bloom Cycle transforms discarded materials into sustainable, handcrafted trophies and recognition pieces that celebrate resilience and achievement. Behind each design lies a deeper message: that nothing and no one is beyond repair. This talk reframes creative practice as a form of postvention and prevention, a way to transform pain into purpose and isolation into belonging.

Through lived experience storytelling, I explore how meaningful work, sustainable design, and community recognition can become protective factors for people experiencing distress or disconnection. The session highlights how creative enterprise models can provide low-barrier employment and social contribution opportunities, particularly for neurodivergent and lived-experience communities who are often excluded from traditional workplaces.

Aligned with the conference theme United Voices, Brighter Futures, this presentation invites delegates to consider how non-clinical, community-led approaches complement mainstream suicide prevention strategies. It demonstrates how the circular economy, reusing what already exists, can inspire a new language of hope within the suicide prevention sector.

Participants will gain insight into:

  • How creativity and sustainable making can support recovery and connection

  • The role of lived experience in shaping inclusive, strengths-based enterprise models

  • Practical examples of cross-sector collaboration between creative industries, mental health, and sustainability networks

By bridging art, design, and lived experience, this presentation champions a hopeful message: that healing and innovation often begin in the same place, with a story, a pair of hands, and the courage to create.
