We live in a world filled with predictions. We predict the weather, what we think the stock markets will do and the outcome of sporting events. But how good are we at predictions and do they really help us? Prediction in suicide prevention – what we think of as risk assessment – is challenging and often comes with poor outcomes. Our field has debates, silos and complexity, yet we all tell people who feel despair that there is hope. This presentation will look at some of the challenges in the field and offer a new way of seeing where heroes are in our lives and how hope can make a difference in our work.
