In many communities, faith can play an integral role in providing a sense of purpose and strength to persevere through hardship. People experience hope through spiritual beliefs and practices which bring meaning in their lives.

The relationship between religion and suicide is complex. Given their significance and influence in the community, in many cultures, faith leaders tend to act as first responders in mental health crises and distress. Faith leaders play a critical role in influencing attitudes, behaviours and practices. They are trusted within the community and often act as confidants, supporting their communities through spiritual guidance during times of distress and challenges, making them well-placed to intervene when someone is experiencing suicidal distress.

In a lived experience led project, Roses in the Ocean engaged in an interfaith dialogue with faith leaders through consultations to better understand how suicide is perceived within their communities and explore ways communities in suicidal distress and bereaved by suicide can be supported. By leveraging the influence and trust these leaders hold, Roses in the Ocean seeks to extend its reach to culturally and spiritually diverse populations, empowering them to take part in meaningful conversations around suicide prevention.

This presentation will provide an overview of the project, processes which were employed to reach interfaith communities. It will also reflect on the emerging themes from the consultations including stigma and shame related to suicide, lack of culturally appropriate service and the need for more education on suicide prevention. This presentation will also highlight challenges and considerations in accessing communities and faith leaders such as language barriers, complex community dynamics and the need for authentic relationships and engagement. There will also be a short presentation by two faith leaders who will provide a community perspective on suicide and the need for a dialogue on suicide prevention and community support.

This presentation embodies the spirit of the theme of United Voices, Brighter Futures by bringing together the diverse voices of interfaith leaders who share their insights, lived experience and cultural understandings around suicide in their communities. This project provides an opportunity for an inclusive dialogue on community-informed approaches to suicide prevention and is an important step forward in shaping the future of suicide prevention with faith leaders in Australia.
