Men's mental health has been left behind in Australia and as a consequence, men are 75% of all deaths by suicide and die 5 years younger than women but are half as likely to see a GP or Psychologist. Despite this, no state or federal governments are focusing on men in their mental health planning or system reform and men's mental health is destined to lag behind women for another generation. To address this gap, Richmind WA and Men's Talk have been leading the advocacy in Western Australia to have men identified as a priority cohort in the WA and Federal Government mental health planning. This has resulted in RW and MT hosting three men's Mental Health and Wellbeing Conferences and we have developed the 'Four Pillars' of advocacy as a result of the consultation and co-design that has occurred at these conferences. The Four Pillars are what we believe the state and federal governments should adopt in their mental health planning to ensure that we can improve men's mental health and reduce suicide in men. Presenting the Four Pillars and explaining our advocacy will provide a template for how this can be replicated in every state in Australia because unless we take men's mental health seriously, we will never improve it or reduce men's suicide.
