Just-in-time learning is an on-demand approach to education that allows learners to access information in a self-directed manner and then apply this knowledge directly to the task at hand, in the moment.

The Health Education and Training Institute (HETI) has developed Just-in-time learning videos to support staff across the state to access short-form videos with knowledge refreshers on safety planning and suicide assessment and formulation. Providing an opportunity to have knowledge refreshed at the point in which a person presents in suicidal crisis:

  • Supports confidence to respond
  • Supports integration of knowledge to practice
  • Allows for encoding of knowledge to long-term memory
  • Improves patient experience through having staff that feel empowered to complete a suicide prevention assessment or safety plan
  • Recognises that there may be a gap in time between formal suicide prevention training and when these skills need to be applied
  • Provides an opportunity for individuals to identify gaps in knowledge and seek further training and development around this
  • Creates an accessible point of information regardless of location or time of day.

These Just-in-Time learning videos are hosted on HETI’s Zero Suicides in Care website and recently, 3000 lanyard cards with QR codes linking to these resources have been provided to NSW Health mental health services across the state.
