Bega Safe Haven provides a welcoming, crisis-responsive space for people experiencing distress, including those at risk of suicide. The Hope Tree project was introduced to foster connection, reflection, and shared resilience within this community setting. Guests and community members are invited to write messages of hope on cards and place them on the tree, creating a visible, evolving symbol of support and solidarity.
The initiative aims to:
Observations and feedback indicate that the Hope Tree enhances engagement, emotional expression, and a sense of belonging for both visitors and staff. Many participants report feeling acknowledged, supported, and inspired by the messages of others, demonstrating the therapeutic and community-building potential of creative, inclusive interventions.
The Hope Tree aligns with the NSPC26 theme, United Voices, Brighter Futures, by valuing lived experience, encouraging collaborative expression, and creating a tangible representation of hope within the mental health and suicide prevention community. This project offers a simple yet powerful model for community-led initiatives that strengthen resilience, foster empathy, and promote inclusive participation in suicide prevention efforts.
