This panel aims to raise awareness the high rate of suicidality amongst male survivors of child sexual abuse (CSA). The issue is an ongoing national tragedy.   There is a lack of specific policy and service responses to these intersecting issues, along with other associated factors for survivors such as alcohol and other drugs, social isolation, and violence. Urgent action is needed to address this national tragedy. Survivors and Mates Support Network (SAMSN) has been supporting research on these issues as well as having a long history in developing lived experience/peer led responses in partnership with professional/clinical interventions with survivors and their supporters to address these intersecting issues. The panel will provide information about how to enhance responses through what has been described as ‘life saving’ by survivors as part of service model. There will be four brief presentations from panel members followed by a discussion and Q & A. First, Patrick O’Leary and Paul Wyles will discuss current research on male survivors of CSA intersections of suicidality and other issues such as substance abuse and violence. Second, Gary Foster will discuss the current policy and service system and the lack of visibility of both child sexual abuse and suicidality in key policy areas stretching from alcohol and other drugs, homelessness, child abuse and neglect, domestic and family violence, key health, and child sexual abuse. Third, Rachel Hart will discuss SAMSN experience where over 70% of survivors requesting help report suicidal thoughts and 47% have had suicidal behaviour and attempts. SAMSN’s approach often incorporates work with survivors’ supporters and connecting with other men who have lived experience. This incorporates a mix of both peer led supports and professional interventions to work together to support survivors to stay alive and thrive. Often this requires a cognisance of a live course approach to managing and responding to the effects of child sexual abuse trauma. Fourth, Craig Hughes-Cashmore will discuss the development of lived experiences leadership and development of SAMSN. This will include a discussion of the history of 8-week groups, regular meetings and engagements, and building a community of male survivors and their supporters. The panel will have time for questions and discussion. Topics covered in this panel will be followed up by a detailed workshop that will provide practical training and ideas for working with male survivors of CSA who are experiencing suicidality as well as ways to provide support to supporters.
