Black Dog Ride Australia is a unique organisation dedicated to raising awareness about depression and suicide prevention. Our mission is to start conversations that matter, breaking the silence and stigma surrounding mental health issues. What sets Black Dog Ride apart is the profound connection our riders have with the cause. Many of our participants have lived experience of depression and suicide or are supporting family and friends who are struggling. This personal connection fuels our commitment and drives our efforts to make a difference.
Since Black Dog Ride’s inception in 2009, we’ve raised over $5,000,000, which has been reinvested into communities through our Grant Funding program. This significant financial contribution has supported numerous mental health initiatives and services, amplifying our impact and reach.
Our rides are more than just a journey on the road; they are a journey of hope and healing. Each ride is an opportunity to share stories, offer support, and create a community of understanding and empathy. The power of shared experiences cannot be underestimated. By bringing together individuals who have faced similar challenges, we foster a sense of belonging and solidarity that is crucial for mental health recovery.
As someone with significant lived experience of trauma and suicide, my ongoing healing journey is deeply intertwined with Black Dog Ride’s mission. The support and camaraderie within this community has been instrumental in my recovery. By sharing my story, I hope to inspire others to seek help and to show that healing is possible.
The impact of Black Dog Ride extends beyond the individual riders. Through our events and community interactions, we aim to educate the broader community about the realities of depression and suicide. By starting conversations, we can change perceptions and encourage more people to seek help. Our ultimate goal is to create a society where mental health is openly discussed, and where those in need can find the support they deserve.
We are what is known as a Bottom-Up organisation. Australia-wide, we have over 8,500 riders, 6,000 volunteers, only three part-time paid staff, and no premises to upkeep. All that we raise pays our insurance and goes back into communities to support mental health.

In conclusion, Black Dog Ride Australia is not just a ride; it’s a movement. It’s a testament to the power of community, the importance of conversation, and the possibility of healing. Together, we’ll make a difference, one ride at a time.
